Ielts stands for International English Language Testing System. Ielts was first started in the year 1989. Every year more than 7 lakh people appear in the Ielts test thus making it one of the most popular tests. Aspirants from more than 120 countries appear in the Ielts test.

Ielts checks the proficiency of the person in English language who is wishing to study or work in a country where the main mode of communication is done in English language.

Countries that ask for the Ielts test are Australia, Canada, New Zealand, UK, Ireland, South Africa etc.

It is mandatory to clear the Ielts test if you wish to study from abroad or to do work in abroad.

Ielts is Recognized by the companies, universities and by other Government sectors.

In Ielts the scoring is done in bands. Overall there are 1-9 bands and different universities set different criteria of bands.

Ielts is managed by 3 main Institutions:

  •        British Council
  •        IDP (Australian Institute)
  •        University of Cambridge E-soul Examinations.

Categories of IELTS

There are two categories or versions of Ielts:

  •        Academic
  •        General
The Academic category is for those persons who want to get higher studies or courses from the abroad whereas General test is need to be taken by the peoples who are moving to English speaking countries for the purpose of Permanent Residence or jobs.


Sections of IELTS

The Ielts test evaluates your English on the basis of Receptive and Productive skills.

Where Receptive skills comprises of Listening and Reading and Productive skills comprises of Writing and Speaking.

  
There are 4 sections of the Ielts exam:

  •        Listening
  •        Reading
  •        Writing
  •        Speaking
The Duration of the Ielts test is of 2Hours 45Minutes.

The Listening section is of 30 minutes. The Listening and the Speaking section of the Academic and General Version test are same whereas the Reading and Writing of both the papers are different.

The Writing section is of 60 minutes and is different for both the versions.
In Academic Writing there is essay writing and graphs, data, charts explanation. Whereas in General Writing test there is essay and letter (formal or semi-formal) writing.

Usually General mode is bit easier than Academic mode and the scores of both the modes are not interchangeable.

The Reading section is also of 60 minutes and is different for both the versions.
